Upper Paugussett State Forest

Newtown, Connecticut

Description

The Upper Paugussett Forest is home to the Upper Gussy Trail, the Lillinonah Trail and Al's Trail. It's 880 acres of prime CT woodlands has a mixed bag of everything, and if you were to hit all the trails, you could easily get a 10 to 12 mile ride.

The Upper Gussy Trail (marked as red) is a 2-mile shared-use trail for Mountain Biking, horses, and hikers. The trail head on the northern side of the forest begins off of the fire/logging road, called the Polly Brody Fire Road (marked as white). The southern trail head starts off of another, unnamed logging road on the west side of the forest, accessible off of Sandford Rd. Combined with the Poly Brody you can get 4 to 5 mile loop.

The trail itself is flowy singletrack with many obstacles and challenges including up-and-overs, rollers, one log ride, and a little bits of technical trail. There are three armored stream crossings and two other wet area armored paths.
